Re: Ten Rules to effective Salmon fishing

In reference to Srarfish's #13. Keeping you hands clean is very important. This is an example from a sturgeon trip. A buddy and I fished in the Biggs area one day and each caught about 15 sturgeon, with one keeper. we both got sunburned pretty bad, as we were not using sunscreen. The next day we went out and fished the same way as the day before, we each had not changed a thing............Other than he put on sunscreen. I was getting bites and catching fish at the same rate as the day before, my buddy "Sunscreen" had onlt two bites and caught one shaker. I am convinced that the suncreen made a huge difference. I know that sturgeon PRIMARILY look for food by smell, and that salmon do not, but it surely does not help to lather up with sunscreen while salmon fishing unless you are extremly careful.

I like to wear a broad rimmed hat, long pants, and a light weight long sleeved shirt. I can get these wet and I still keep pretty cool. My boat has no protection from the weather. A guy could also wear latex gloves to handle the bait or be seroius about a good hand wash after using sun screen.

Fished Ice Harbor dam yesterday. Managed to get one chinook (12lbs.) Had a lot of company! The word is out. NOTE: At 6pm they opened ALL the gates and it shut down fishing real quick. Per discussion w/ a dam operator, he indicated that they plan on doing the same for some time. What is the word on McNary??

I also fished Tuesday below McNary. caught 1 fish (keeper) about 6:20 am, had 3 other hits, could not keep them on. There was alittle red aluminum boat that had the hot plug. I seen them land 3 keepers, released 1 wild and lost 2 others. I tried Ringold this morning throwing vibrax spinner, no action what so ever. Drove out to Ice Harbor to look and see, talked to 4 plunkers 2 towards the dam on the Burbank side, only one had any action and he lost the fish. There was a total of 4 boats towards the dam, water looked a little more stained then below McNary. Also will be hitting McNary tomorrow. Good luck to ya E-mann

I fished below McNary Sunday with the family and Monday and Tuesday with my brother. On Sunday we had a hit on a herring wrapped M2SP, but it didn't stick. Only saw a few caught on the OR side and a few more caught on the WA side. I heard later that Saturday was good, but Sunday was slow. Monday was a good day with about at least 12-15 fish (that I saw) caught on the WA side. We got going early and had a nice 5 lb jack hit our M2SP, and then a 10-12 lb nate hit a prawn spinner for a gentle boatside release. Then the heart breaker was a nice 12-14 lb keeper that came unbuttoned from our prawn spinner beside the boat after 5 minutes of tug-o-war. Tuesday was slow - only saw 6 or so fish caught but we managed one of them - a nice 10 lb cookie-cutter keeper. That was it, except for a false-alarm sucker that hit just as I was grilling the steaks for lunch. Plan to head back out Thursday - Sat and then move up to Ice Harbor after that.

I made it out this past Sunday. I went out with three friends on a boat starting at about 4:50 AM. There were already a dozen or so boats on the water by that time... We fished from 4:50 AM to 2:00 in the afternoon with no luck. We were using sardine wrapped kwikfish - two on jet divers and two with weights back bouncing... Out of about 50 or so boats, I saw only 6 fish on. A friend of mine went down to Drano this weekend and said that the action there was incredibly slow also. It seems funny... The fish count is so high, but the bite seems to be awfully slow... I'll probably be hitting the Yakima now that the Columbia is going to be closed, hopefully with more luck. Anyway, best of luck to all you guys.

Fished the lower Yakima today. Started slow but the two of us managed 8 fish... one pig was 3 lbs. Two others were in the 2lb. range. The river is different this year due to larger runoff. NOTE: We had some large chinook playing around us today.

I was up there last July from the 5th through the 9th. The boats guys were mainly using a new lure called Brad's superbait, which is what Emann was referring to. The bankies were drifting glow corkies at night. I saw a lot of fish caught by the boats during that time and saw a lot of fish rolling. This was right below Wells Dam.

Was out on the Columbia 4/27 above Priest. Water was 45 degrees at around 9 in the morning. Picked up a couple SM later afternoon on some rocks in 2>5 feet of H2O. 2.5 lbs or better. Saw more and bigger... once they saw me it was over though. Water wasn't all that clear and it was tough to pick out your boulders as deepl as I'd like. Fish were glued to the rocks.

Been out 3 previous times in the basin with one day of 8 LM first week of April in 48.5 dregee water. Then got skunked on Potholes next day. Following weekend got skunked on Seeps... I saw a TON of fish
