Fishing September 28, 2003
Posted by Everett on Thursday, October 02, 2003 (17:06:04) (1167 reads)
Steelhead fishing the last weekend of September proved to be a quality experience with a beautiful day. We prepared to launch our boat at the Snake River Lyons Marina ramp and watched while several boats were being taken from the water. Two of the fishermen we spoke to were from Spokane. They arrived Saturday afternoon and stayed overnight. They fished from the down river side of Little Goose Dam to the west end of the Lyons Ferry fish hatchery. The fish caught for this two day event were 2 catfish, 1 bass and a sucker.
After lauching our boat , we went up river to the mouth of the Tucanon, stopping in 25 feet of water. Hundreds of fish were on our fish finder, passing in schools at a depth ranging from 23 to 15 feet. The water temperature was 66 to 68 degrees. There was a lot of debris on the surface, suggesting the water level was being controlled.
We tried several methods of fishing with shrimp, on the bottom, jigging off the side and with a bobber. There were approximately 15 boats on the water, about 5 were trolling and 10 were fishing with shrimp. After 6 hours of fishing and seeing only 1 native Steelhead caught, we called it a day.
One good point about our trip was stopping at the bait shop in Starbuck. They had fresh shrimp, some snacks and a great fishermen’s sports store. They are open from 5 AM until 6 PM every day except Tuesday until the Steelhead season is over
