We don't actually get a fishable run of springers at Vernita. Most of the springers turn and head up the Snake, and those that do go up the Columbia are off limits except sometimes for bank fishing at Ringold and for fishing the Icicle River and some other upriver tribs. For local springer action you'll want to head down to McNary, Ice Harbor, or Little Goose (depending on seasons) or downriver to Drano, Wind, John Day, Bonneville, Portland, Longview, or Cathlamet.
Lower river will be possible in March and definite in April. McNary will typically be late April and first week of May. Ringold, if open, is mid May. Watch seasons closely as they close and reopen on short notice. They often get overpredicted, overharvested early, and shut down early due to low returns making it a short season for us upriver... it usually closes just as the fishing gets good.

Springers are sometimes tougher to catch than fall fish but are worth the effort because they are way way better eating. Never ever turn down an offer of a chunk of springer if someone is fooling enough to offer it.

At Mcnary we back troll Kwiks, anchor and fish a Kwik above a dripper or troll them upstream. Havent tried prawn spinners, herring or other plugs but there isn't any reason they wouldn't work too.

The water isn't slow in April-May. In fact at Ice Harbor it's ripping so hard it's hard to anchor.

Most springer fishing is done on anchor with kwiks, but I've done well also backtrolling plugs or running herring or eggs.

Yup. It's typically not open above McNary.

If the predicted run actually shows up, there might might be some areas open to fishing that haven't been lately. It's "supposed" to be the biggest run in 80 years or so... Keep your fingers crossed!
