I am looking for a place to go for spring break. I am not interested in cabo anymore, but was thinking more of a steelhead/salmon trip to oregon or Western Washington. I have family in Portland, but they are not fisher people. Any ideas for some success? No motor boat, but have some experience bank fishing steelhead. Thanks,

No first hand experience but you might research Forks, WA. The Quillayute, Bogachiel, Sol Duc and Calawah are all right there. Think there a number of other rivers within easy driving distance too.

What are the dates for your spring break? My buddies in Portland do pretty well on local rivers there (Sandy, Clack) and on the coast. There might even be a few springers to be had depending on the date.

There are also options for steelhead, springers, or walleyes farther east in WA, again depending on timing.

Where in Montana are you coming from?

That week will be prime time for spring chinook right in Portland, trolling herring at I5 or anchoring kwikfish at I205. Depending on how early the fish show up it also might be good plunking or backbouncing at Bonneville by then. Seasons are still being finalized but it looks like salmon fishing will be open Wednesday through Saturday above Hayden Island and Thursday through Saturday below Hayden Island.

I grew up in Montana (Great Falls)...enjoy your visit!

Thank you Starfish that does sound like a great trip. I am from Superior.
Wondering about tackle, I have a 8 1/2 foot rod running twenty pound line. Is this heavy enough?

The North Fork of the Lewis River is a good spot if you're stuck on shore. I hit that when I'm travelling for business. Can be crowded when the fish are running. You can fish with a float or on the bottom. I run the same setup as you have got and it works fine for me. Superior is a cool town. We snowmobile out of there in the winter. Good luck!

Your tackle will work fine.
I drive through Superior about 3 or 4 times a year back and forth to my cabin- nice area.
