if you like sitting on your butt for hours! yeah its great. Otherwise, it will help when the water levels are abou 3 feet higher.

Right now is a good time too! not as much pressure and quite a few fish

I've been to McNary twice in as many weekends... The first weekend, we had two rods out and came up with two fish. Both were shortly after dark. This past weekend, we caught two on two rods again, although both were shortly after midnight. All fish were caught on a blinking wiggle wart... Been hoping to hook up with a couple chinook, but all the catches were steelhead. Anyone have suggestions for catching chinook behind McNary?

I started catching fish at McNary almost a month ago. Hasn't been fast fishing but they are there. Ice Harbor has a few fish too. If you are shore bound I would recommend Wallula though.

You should see several cars stacked up on the side of Highway 730 between Port Kelly and Wallulla.

byronelliott79,

You don't have to cast far to catch steelhead in that area. Most anglers in that area are using a float setup with shrimp and "rock Dancer" or other type of jig. You might also consider some sort of scent to apply on your shrimp or jig. I tend to fish around six to eight feet deep.

Did I already say that you don't have to cast far to be successful?

Some friends of mine and I trolled 4 rods at McNary Friday night, but picked up no fish. We were also told by a ranger who was patrolling the Oregon boat launch that it is now illegal to fish the Oregon side of the river for steelhead after dark... According to him, the red buoy that has the blinking light near the end of the wood barge wall is the barrier and all fishermen must stay to the Washington side of that. It seemed kind of like a bummer deal to me. That leaves us only about 1/5 or less of the width of the river to fish after dark... I am going to contact the WDFW and I'll let people know what they have to say.

That's been the story for quite a few years now. Actually I thought the official line was a little farther south than that but the rules definitely say that although both licenses are valid on the entire river, you must comply with the laws of the state in which you are fishing... which means no night fishing on the Oregon side. A lot of folks break that rule but there are plenty of fish on the WA side anyway.

Actually I am seeking water temps in the Columbia and Snake rivers. Is there any web sites that post them?
