FishOn!,

Many people use lil' corkies with yarn and a snell hook. They also put a piece of lead on the line to keep the corky down towards the bottom of the river. You might also find information on your topic if you search for drift fishing.

I have attempted to drift fish serveral times but have not had the luck the DoubleD has. I think he is the master as I have personally watched him catch a salmon on corkies and eggs. Smile

Here is a well written thread which JimmyD covers the topic.

I'll tell ya, we didn't have any success with the corky, yarn, and roe although I have seen them caught that way.

Actually we were successful with a very strange combination, that I think I remember Glock talking about last year. However Glock's version called for a pink worm I believe, but we didn't have any so we used nightcrawlers.

We took a slip float with a bobber stop and hung a large spoon from it and tipped it with a nightcrawler. We were using the big yellow spoons with the orange poka dots on it. I'm sure it looks somewhat like a roe sack coming down the river, but it also seems to get em pretty fired up after you pass it past them a couple of times.

Otherwise using a big ol spinner seemed to work the best, about a size 4 or 5, they seemed to dig on the copper or the blue.

It depends a lot on what kind of water you're fishing. In the Reach we do best backtrolling magnum wiggle warts or kwikfish, but we do also catch a lot of salmon with a huge gob of eggs and a couple of corkies, backtrolled behind a diver. In smaller rivers I really like fishing with a bobber and eggs, or with a vibrax spinner. I'm intrigued by the spoon and crawler idea-- what kind of water was that fished in?

I've caught a lot of steelhead drift fishing corkies, usually with shrimp or eggs, but not a whole lot of salmon. You'll hear a lot of people talk about plunking corkies for salmon in tidewater but a lot of those are flossing or lining (snagging) them and not really fishing.

Hey thanks all. I am fishing the Nisqually. Kings are running ... ok. The day after I posted I went down there and everyone was using different techniques... from roe to corkies to pixies. Three were landed within an hour. Only one went back ( a wild)I am varying my techniques also.

Starfish

You asked what river we were on. It was the Yakima it drifts really slow. We used alot of Vibrax spinner combinations. The combination I mentioned up above really did work believe it or not. It went down like a rock three times, we only landed one though.

I had a feeling you might have been talking about the Yakima. Too bad the run there is going to be pretty poor this fall. I thought the spoon/bobber idea sounded really cool though... I might try it elsewhere where we usually fish bobber/eggs.

So I and my wife are new to salmon fishing.
I have mainly done high Mt. fishing or low lake (trout,Bass...) I read in a mgazine today that small "dick Nite's" would be perfect for the Humpys that are running we will be hitting the Puyallup on Saterday any advise on how effective they will be or should we just throw it out and see what bites?

I've always been fond of the spoons. Even though I haven't had much success. I seem to lose lots in the weeds. I would love to hear a success story!
