Can anyone tell me where there would be some good access from the bank to go after some of those B-run Steelhead on the Clearwater. I am going to take a couple more trips here in the next few weeks to do some fishing. I would love to take advantage of some of the larger Steelhead run. Even though I had a bad day on my trip to the Grande Ronde I will be going back in about a week to try it out again. Would love to make a combo trip out of it and spend about four days fishing.

You can fish darn near the whole river from the bank. The most popular area this time of year is up by Orofino. It is called Mcgill hole. It is right before the Pink House Launch. There is always a bunch of rigs there, you can't miss it. I rather fish lower on the river. There are fish all over the river and you don't have to go up that high to catch fish. Most bank anglers use bobbers. The fish will be in the deeper holes along the drifts. Most bank fisherman I see aren't getting deep enough. Tie a large chunk of pencil lead on, no hook just the lead, and bounce it on the bottom drifting with the current. Use this to determine how deep you need to go. Also use this to find the deep hole. You will be bouncing along at a regular interval and then the bouncing slows down or even stops...the weight is dropping and that is your hole. Sit on that hole and keep floating your jig or bait no more than a foot off the bottom. Fish move a lot on this river and it isn't uncommon to pull 4 or 5 fish out of a hole in a 2 hour stretch.

I and my "dift gear of doom" may just have to pay a visit. What's the window (guesstimate) on "good fishing time?" In other words, does the CW fish well to the end of the season?

It should be good through March. The hatchery fish are really just starting to show up.
The overall best time for the Clearwater is the fall.
