Did you know there is a great resource available to view the Catchable Trout Plant reports for the State of Washington? Well, there is.. This chart gives you information on the Lakes by region-county-lake, Date of Plant, Species, number planted, fish per pound, what hatchery the fish came from, and any related notes.

I've heard of a pattern that hatchery fish follow in the days/weeks following their planting. For example, the fish will remain close to the surface for the first week, then will investigate deeper water, etc. Has anyone ever used this pattern with any attainable success? How long until trout get good and pink?

Well, I think the pattern you're talking about is pretty much a given. They'll stay near the surface because that's all they know in the hatchery...they'll explore more as time goes on.
However...with the trout meat getting pink?...that's a tough one. In my opnion, it varies on size and diet. Mostly on size, though.
a lot of my bigger trout are all either pink or orange. Caught quite a few a while back...the smallest was 3 1/2 lbs (rainbows) and the biggest was just over 6 lbs. They were the sterile steelhead they planted (so I'm told they're sterile). At any rate, a fish's a fish, right? well, the meat was all nice and pink/orange on the bigger ones, but the smaller the fish, the paler the meat.
